CBD Drug Interactions You Should Know About

CBD and whole-plant extract.

Today we’ll talk about some common drug interactions you
might experience with CBD.

Interactions between medications are very common. More than
half of all medications are metabolized in the human body by
a family of enzymes known as cytochrome P450.

This means that THC and CBD will interact with many common
medications. They can either inhibit the effects of the
other drugs or cause them to be amplified.

Drug interactions are especially common in the elderly
population, who are often on medications for diabetes, pain,
high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

This population is also the fastest-growing group of
medical cannabis users. This means it’s very important
to understand how cannabis compounds interact with other
medications.

The goal is to predict — and prevent — negative interactions
while taking advantage of situations where the cannabis and
medications act synergistically.

For example, THC greatly enhances the pain-killing effects
of opiate drugs, and CBD is promising for reducing withdrawal
and dependence upon these drugs.

Drug interactions can be useful — or they can be dangerous.

Enhancing the opiate effects may increase their pain-killing
effects, but it may also increase the likelihood of overdose.

If you’re taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, THC
and CBD may increase their effect and create a problem with toxicity.

That means checking with your doctor about decreasing your dose when
you’re using cannabinoids. You may even wish to switch to a different
pain reliever entirely.

With opiate based pain killers, however, cannabinoids tend to have
a synergistic effect. They increase the medication’s pain-killing
effects, but they also help with dependence issues.

Prescription opiate use and overdose deaths have significantly
decreased in states that have legalized medical cannabis.

Another significant interaction is with diabetic medication,
especially insulin. Cannabinoids show signs of influencing glucose
and insulin sensitivity.

This could have a significant impact on patients with diabetes
(though the effect depends on which type of cannabinoid is taken).

Insulin sensitivity may be impaired by compounds like THC, while
CBD and THCV may increase this sensitivity.
